Wheel nuts and wheel studs are affected by many factors. Previous service, older vehicles, temperature, rust; seized and or frozen metals are brittle and can break. Worn, stripped, or damaged wheel nuts. Emergency brakes are a safety item also used when changing tires to avoid vehicle moving during service. Emergency brake cables that are not maintained properly can break or seize on when used. Vehicle jacking points are affected by pre existing damage, rust, weight, and positioning of vehicle. Even when following manufacturer’s directions, conditions can exist, that can result in damage to vehicle underbody, when changing tires. Body panels and doors on older uni-body frames (Older Kia's with composite polymer panels as an example), can weaken over time, and can split on seams, and or buckle, during jacking or lifting process. Spare tire, brackets, storage area covers are affected by many variables (maintenance, loads rust, dirt, salt, water, and temperature) and damage can be caused when trying to remove spare tires.
